چکیده

In this study, the ability of porous silicon nanoparticles (PSi NPs) to entrap and deliver nitric oxide (NO) as an effective antibacterial agent is tested against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. NO was entrapped inside PSi NPs functionalized by means of the thermal hydrocarbonization (THC) process. Subsequent reduction of nitrite in the presence of d-glucose led to the production of large NO payloads without reducing the biocompatibility of the PSi NPs with mammalian cells. The resulting PSi NPs demonstrated sustained release of NO and showed remarkable antibacterial efficiency and anti-biofilm-forming properties. These results will set the stage to develop antimicrobial nanoparticle formulations for applications in chronic wound treatment.

Functionalized Mesoporous Silica via an Aminosilane Surfactant Ion Exchange Reaction: Controlled Scaffold Design and Nitric Oxide Release.

Nitric oxide-releasing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were prepared using an aminosilane-template surfactant ion exchange reaction. Initially, bare silica particles were synthesized under basic conditions in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). These particles were functionalized with nitric oxide (NO) donor precursors (i.e., secondary amines) via the addition of amino...

Development of Fluorescent FRET Probes for “Off-On” Detection of L-Cysteine Based on Gold Nanoparticles and Porous Silicon Nanoparticles in Ethanol Solution

A new type of fluorescence "off-on" probe was designed for L-Cysteine (L-Cys) based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between negatively charged amino-capped porous silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) and positively charged citrate-stabilized Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). In this proposed FRET immunosensor, novel water-soluble amino-conjugated porous SiNPs in ethanol with excellent pho...

The effect of nanocrystalline silicon host on magnetic properties of encapsulated iron oxide nanoparticles.

The purpose of this work is a detailed comparison of the fundamental magnetic properties of nanocomposite systems consisting of Fe3O4 nanoparticle-loaded porous silicon as well as silicon nanotubes. Such composite structures are of potential merit in the area of magnetically guided drug delivery. For magnetic systems to be utilized in biomedical applications, there are certain magnetic properti...

Variable blocking temperature of a porous silicon/Fe3O4 composite due to different interactions of the magnetic nanoparticles

In the frame of this work, the aim was to create a superparamagnetic nanocomposite system with a maximized magnetic moment when magnetized by an external field and a blocking temperature far below room temperature. For this purpose, iron oxide nanoparticles of 3.8-, 5- and 8-nm size have been infiltrated into the pores of porous silicon. To fabricate tailored magnetic properties of the system, ...

Light-induced nitric oxide release from physiologically stable porous coordination polymers.

The development of nitric oxide (NO) releasing materials has been of significant importance due to their application in cell biology and biomedicine. Besides the macromolecular scaffold dangling NO releasing moiety, porous materials have been used to host such NO releasing molecules. Here we synthesized a series of porous coordination polymers (PCPs), in which N-nitrosamine functional groups as...
